PART ONE

When I was researching Rio, I discovered it is the second largest city of Brazil. I wanted to incorporate that more so than the beach part of Brazil . . . even though I put the ocean by the city (Like it really is) the main part of the design is the city.

I left it very abstract. Very simple lines. Something that you can glance at and know immediately that it is a city.

The color of the ocean is the same color as the purplish ring on the olympic rings. The reason i chose the blues for the city is cause the picture i was copying the shape of the city from had a really pretty blue tone and i thought it looked good. And one of the colors on the brazil flag is blue . . .

I chose this font because it is strong and simple. I was going to do something more with a calligraphic style cause that shows a fanciness, almost like a getaway place. . . but again, I kept it very city like, and structural.

Sketches

PART TWO

Photography is a very touchy business. In Utah, people want the quality but they have a hard time paying the money for it. More than ever photography involves a lot of photoshop work! People are staring to really like the design aspect along with their photos.

I want my logo to look creative and simple. Not just a name, i wanted a brand with it. Most photographers just have their name and call it a day. I need something to brand myself with.

Yes. My color scheme worked well.

3D Object Write Up

Here’s my project experimenting with the 3D effects in Adobe Illustrator CS4. I was really glad that I got to use 3D. It’s been lots of fun, and I hope to improve it over the next few years. If you can give any pointers I’d really appreciate it.

This project on its own took me a good few hours to complete, from sketching to experimenting with the different 3D effects. The majority of my 3Ds have been either Bevels or Revolves (only one revolve was a right edge revolve.

Completed Project with source files posted above.

Tutorial Link: http://www.gomediazine.com/tutorials/from-sketch-to-vector-illustration/

This tutorial was cool and simple. It had several tips on how to get a basic sketch done by you or a client refined and scanned into Illustrator and then tips on how to simulate inking, coloring and shading like a comic book or some of these sweet digital designs you see out there. I chose this tutorial because I want to learn how to create more original artwork that I can use in other medias other than just logos and business cards and stuff like that. Stuff that could be put on t-shirts, comic books videos, etc. I encourage you to skim through the tutorial and try it out.

Below is the stages of my image from sketch to inks to color and shading and then the final finished image again. I had fun doing this.

This is my sketch:

Here is the “inked” or pen tool outlines I did the outlines and then inside lines and then made a compound path to create the effect:

I copied another layer of the compound path for the ink lines and then chose Object -> Compound Path -> Release. That let you go back and delete the outlines and you are left with the inside shapes you can color.

Here is the complete image with shading and background I used the pathfinder tool and intersected a copy of the color layer and the shaded objects to create quick shading:

Here is my compressed .ai file: ewardell_tut
